He came home then........Bloggers Block!

I started this post a while ago and got stuck..............emotionally stuck.

8 weeks now since that day and NO I am just not over it, not by a long stretch...... the post started like this.....

"Sparky is home with us again albeit in a large plastic tub with just his name on it. However, his soul is everywhere, on the wisp of every breeze, on the tip of many a spoken word and forever in memory"

Then I stopped in tears and Bloggers Block set in. The days since have been quite full and so every excuse to say, no time to blog bla bla bla!

I tried to do other posts but they just didnt gel, I didnt delete this one though. Deep down I knew I would finish it, when I was ready.

I just havent been able to open the tub and re-unite Sparks with Lucy under the Lavatera in the garden. I hope Lucy doesnt mind but just not ready to let go. Human emotions, so complex arent they?

Lucy's Lavatera

Then I began to think about all the fur-babies we have belonged to.

First of all there was:

Whiskey "THE SAINT"

Our very first rescue dog as a newly engaged couple, 1995.

Rescued from the RSPCA at Radcliffe Upon Trent, this Lurcher (Collie/Whippet cross) NEVER put a paw wrong in all his time with us.

Forlorn, matted and hardly any fur on his body, he sat still in the pen and pleaded with his beautiful brown eyes to give him a chance. His beautiful soul captivated our hearts and Whiskey was ours. We were rewarded a thousand times, the most affectionate, fun loving boy who developed the most beautiful coat and fabulous foxy ears!

He is buried under a cherry tree on the Brecon Beacons where he loved to romp and forage.

Then came:

Sammie " THE BIG FELLA CHAMP"

Our first rescue Greyhound.

"Greyhounds make great pets, give a retired greyhound a home" I was swayed by the huge PR campaign by the Greyhound Trust in 1997 to re-home Sammie.

Sammie was a Champion Ex-Racer, when he arrived at the house, we were both open-jawed, he was huge and strutted into the house with all the attitude of a hard-knock teenager. He went straight up to our cheese plant in the front room and cocked his leg and left his mark.

However, he didnt fool us for long. The hard exterior gave way to the softest centre, doesnt it always?

I have so many tales to tell about Sammie Big Fella, note to self to dedicate a blog to the boy. He was an incredible dog, he had presence, charisma, an air of authority, a gentle strength and I always felt totally protected, he definitley owned me.

Suffice to say, Sammie brought me through some of the darkest days of my life, he slept with his head on my pillow and wherever I went he came with me, without complaint, just acceptance that this was how we had to live. Even when that living involved a damp, cold caravan in the middle of a field. For a time, HE was the reason I got out from underneath the duvet and as such, he is eternally loved.

He only let me go when he knew I was happy again. Reunited with Gareth, he said "Mum my job is done, I'm tired now"

"Night night basket Sammie" (The shortened version of Goodnight Sammie, into your basket now)
4th June 2004.

Big Fella, 13 years old and still had the stance of a Champion

Then as a friend for Sammie came:

Casey "THE DIVA"

We thought Sammie might enjoy some greyhound company, the trainer who brought Sammie to us arrived one day with Casey.

An elegant, diminutive blue brindle girl. Stunningly beautiful and oh did she know it!

"Just treat me like the Precious Princess that I am"

The total opposite to Sammie. She didnt strut, she sashayed. She looked down on Sammie like some ruffian low life and treated his attempts at play with total indifference and distain.

Notice how her right paw is elegantly crossed over her left!
It wasnt a match made in heaven and in the end, distraught yet defeated she was rehomed.

BUT we made sure our Princess had the best of homes, a home she wanted.

Well it turned out our Diva girl should have won an oscar for her acting ability, aloof, high maintenace was out and playful puppy was in!

She was  rehomed with a family with 3 young girls, the little minx was now one of the girls and played and played like a puppy with those children. Something we could never give her, but like all of them and like indelible ink, she left her mark on our hearts and lived out her days enriching the childhoods of 3 very lucky girls and Mummy visited her to the end.

Sparky "THE STREET BOY"
Lucy  "THE GENTLE ONE"
HUSBAND AND WIFE

We only wanted one. We came home with two. Kennelled together at Northants Greyhound Rescue, we just couldnt split them up.

Opposites do attract sometimes.

Lucy was a champion hurdler called Moonlighting professionally. An elegant fawn brindle and so gentle and all for the quiet life. Oh but she loved her bit of rough, her Sparky boy and kept him in line, like any good wife he got a good barking at on a regular basis.

Sparky really wasnt very bright. He was a failed racer and ended up living with a homeless person on the streets. But what he lacked in brains he more than made up for in BOUNCE and bundles of enthusiasm for life. There was never a dull moment with a Sparky in your life and he made us laugh till our belly's ached.

Husband and Wife, joined at the hip

Lucy was only with us for 3 years but she was so loved and she cherished our love, that I know, I defy anyone not to have loved Lucy, wasnt there a TV show called I love Lucy? Well it was impossible not to, she was just simply smashing.

Gentle in spirit but fragile in health she left us on 12th January 2010.

Sparky missed the "Wife" so much. He moped and it soon became clear to us that he enjoyed the company of other dogs and being a loner wasnt for him. We tried our best to take her place but no-one could.

Lets get a PUPPY!!! Having always rescued our dogs we had never had that experience.

We set our heart on Blue.

Blue "THE BRAVE"

Blue was a beautiful blue lurcher inside and out. After our holiday we were very excited about picking our boy up and bringing him home to Sparky.

It wasnt to be. We came home from that holiday in sad times. My Father had died and Blue was bravely battling but losing his fight to meningitis.

He did his very best but at just 14 weeks old, his little immune system just wasnt strong enough.

He died on the day of my Father's funeral, 20th September 2010.

My Father, a life long dog lover, needed Blue more than we did, its the only way we could make any sense of it. But just like the rest, the longevity of his life was immaterial, our little boy Blue will never be forgotten, he was still ours.

Little Blue, never forgotten, how could you forget that adorable face xxx
Still in search of a friend for our Sparks, we finally came home with:

Radish "THE PUPPY" (named after a salad vegetable)

Radish's introduction to our home was a fraught and frightening time! We couldnt bear to lose another puppy but here we were AGAIN with a desperately ill fur-baby on our hands. A deadly parasite. The vet said, we will give him the meds but its really down to him to fight.

And fight he did, 2 whole months he pushed on through, I dont want to go anywhere he was saying, I want to be with you.

Sparky came into his own, not so dim afterall. He nurtured that puppy like any good big brother would do, he loved that puppy and he protected him.

Dont you worry Radders, Big Bro has got your back

No money could buy a better mentor, role model or trainer for a puppy than our Sparks and under his watch, our Radish grew stronger and stronger.

Then came the day when Sparky's own health began to fail, we knew we were on borrowed time and once again we knew we were heading down that painful path once more. He would have the best of his halycon days, we would make sure of that.

Soon came the day when it was puppy's turn to return some canine comfort and provided a soft cushion for some old bones.

You just lean on me big bro

21st June 2011, the longest day, we lost our Sparky boy.

This post started with him and so it is fitting that it should end with him.

Our Sparky, an all round WINNER.

This time last week...........

.........it was a beautiful sunny day circa 23 degrees, cotton ball clouds and light refreshing breeze.

I bumped into another dog walker and I noticed as she approached her broad grin mirrored mine.

In unison, "isnt it a beautiful day?" we chirped as she restrained her white and black terrier. She then went on to say.

"Who couldnt appreciate a day like this, the scenery, the vista, the blue sky and the sunshine?"

"Quite, its stunning and I feel so lucky I have the time to walk my dog and appreciate it"

"Very lucky indeed" she said "I dont ever take it for granted, especially on a rainy, grey, drizzly day, you think back, it keeps you going"

One week later and we have such a day. How glad I am I took my camera out with me, this time last week.

Beans being grown for animal fodder NOT human fodder - woops!
Undulating English meadows
Which way now? Doesn't matter, all equally as lovely
Radders cutting a path through the swathes of wheat, now on the turn

Meadows sprinkled with daisies

But if it didnt rain, how could we enjoy such lush greenery as this, when the day is fine?

The English countryside is a true gem, especially mid summer.

Oh la la!

Yesterday on my gauntlet of Tescos, (still havent got this online shopping sussed!) you will never guess what happened?

I swerved the Walkers Sensations, the Quavers, the French Fries and the Monster Munch! Well done Mrs T-J! BUT........................

..........................I went to the choccy aisle. Yes, moi, she that eats choccy once in every 823 days.

I bought them, I ate them and I enjoyed them.

In a Grossman type voice "Lets look at the evidence"

I have no explanation but could proffer some:

1. A longing to be one of the crowd?
2. Hormones?
3. Low Blood sugar?
4. It was Wednesday?

Today it's 14 Juillet,  Bastille Day

Vive La Revolution!!!

Rebellion and Revolution thats it, I like that idea, I feel a banner coming on:

 "Vive Les Maltesers!"

Walkers I'm going on strike, I might even march on a protest just for one day, I might just become French-aise and eat Pain au Chocolat and watch Les Miserables

Tomorrow I will repent but for today .... Je m'appelle Chantal

Salad Vegetable is 1 year old today!

Happy Birthday Radish! (aka Radster, Radders, Little Rad, Puppy, Momma's Bobba {{{!}}}, the boy is quite embarassed by the latter but I never use it in front of his mates obviously)

A trip down memory lane

Puppy with the wonky ear, when did you grow up so quickly?

When was the last time I could pick you up and hold you in my arms?

How wonderful for us all, your first trip to the seaside?

And if the big fella was here I am sure he would be congratulating himself today for a first class mentoring role and puppy apprenticeship, however the bin raiding trick, wasnt on the training schedule Sparks. Clearly another agenda.

Well no birthday celebration is complete without a cake. "About time too Momma!"

Bring on that declicious concoction of sausage meat, liver, cottage cheese, pumpkin seeds and oats!

Right then Radder, who's for pass the parcel?

"oh no Momma, I couldnt, possibly couldnt, I am stuffed. Quite, quite replete hic"

"Happy 1st Birthday to me....zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz....."

Happy Birthday Puppy, the scruffy dog we always wanted. xxx

It's often said but................

........................it's true,  there really isn't anywhere more beautiful  than the British Isles on a gorgeous Summer's day.

Sand between my toes

A room with a view!

It's perfect to cherish and relish these days and we do, only because they dont occur everyday.

Who needs to take a 9 hour flight to the Bahamas for blue skies, sun and white beaches, no-one, not on a perfect Summer's day.

Enjoy Herm Island on such a day.

Compelled to buy one, just to be 6 years old again and........................

yes I bought my shells home. Of course.

And as the sun sank into slumber, she left us with at least an hour of tantalising flaming glory, to be savoured, soothed by, mesmerised by and in awe of.

And we were, along with the inner peace derived from comfortable shared silence, shared appreciation and a very lovely rose wine, won at the Herm School Tombola! Jammy to the end my Hubster!

After 17 years we finally have an "our song!"

After one last walk across the cliff tops and a final stop to wave across the channel to our beautiful Island of Sark, it was time to leave the fabulous White House Hotel on Herm.

We boarded the Trident, a choppy sea, a swell of 10 feet. They had already cancelled the evening ferry. We set off on the first leg of our journey home.

I didnt look back as I knew the hard lump in my throat was just one glance back away from forming fat watery blobs on my cheeks.

The rain came. Arriving on Guernsey, Hubster knew I was a tad subdued, no words required. "Come on you" he cajoled "I'm taking you for a sharpener"

Finally settled in the White D'or Tapas and Mezze bar. Perfect, looking out at the wonderful craft in the harbour.

  • Houmus & pitta bread topped with a generous sprinkling of smoked paprika and a glug of extra virgin.
  • A little plate of sticky ribs
  • Spanish chicken and chorizo
  • Pan fried prawns and calamari with olive oil, chilli, lemon and garlic
  • 1 glass of Sancerre, 1 Corona beer with lime wedge
We were the only ones there and that was just fine. With time to kill we grazed and read our books, talked and listened to some Bruno Mars.

Then it happened, "this is my song for you"he said

"Really?" That's one of the loveliest things.

"Yes I always think of you when I hear it" he said

"Well I am always going to think of you too when I hear it in future" I said

And.........that's settled after all these years we finally have our song.

Bruno Mars : You're amazing just the way you are.

And as I continued to swoon in my reverie, Hubster got up and popped outside to put a bet on the horses. Thats him!

"Come on you" he said "Time to board the ferry, time to go home"

A bientot.

Stuff em I say!

Scenario

Me: " I am so sorry to have to cancel your appointment today, I have had to have my dog put down and I am too upset to treat, I hope you understand and can I offer you XYZ date as an alternative"

They: "Oh yes of course, no problem, sorry to hear that, that date will be fine"

Roll on Sunday and an email arrives.

Dear Stables Clinic

We have both thought about this and come to the conclusion that you have become unreliable and unprofessional and would like to cancel the appointments we have with you.

This is the second time you have cancelled and rearranged our appointments in recent months and we dont find it acceptable. We are sorry about the death of your dog but we really NEEDED this appointment.

Thank you for your understanding
Mr and Mrs Blah Blah

I normally would do the "professional thing" and not rise to such an email and let it float in the wind and allow Karma to do what it does.

However, I am 41, and at this age I find myself increasingly thinking, no, no I wont allow you to rebuff my hard earnt skills like that.

I will respond.

Dear Mr & Mrs Blah Blah

I am sorry to hear, after many years treating you both, that you now deem me to be unreliable and unprofessional.

However, if cancelling you for caring for my sprained wrist and mourning for my beloved pet is considered unprofessional, then yes, you are quite right.

I wish you all the best in your endeavours with another therapist more professional than me.

Kindest regards.............................................

Now then that response was unprofessional. I recognise that. However, I dont care and I will let that float on the wind...........

It's holiday time now, going to reboot and enjoy Mother Nature in all her glory. Joyous now, work is finished and relished a wonderful afternoon tea and cake with friends that fill my heart with warmth and my belly jiggle with laughter................those are the things that really matter xxx

STUFF EM I say, my bouyant husband said something else!!!

Never "Herm" of it!

No TV.

No internet.

Probably no mobile reception either.

Wonderful!

Welcome to Herm, our destination for the next week, post what will no doubt be, a crazy Take That party at Wembley Stadium.

Isn't she lovely? I like to think of Island's in the feminine, she's a beaut and the epitome of the phrase "all good things come in little packages".

Just one mile long and half a mild wide. Aahhh, how dinky and sweet!

Those of you who know me well enough are now starting to wonder if you know me at all. What no action packed, mad crazy activities fit for adrenalin junkies like me? No hairing around in the air, on  the ground, under it or sea bound? What the hell are you going to do Mrs T-J, cabin fever surely?

Nope, not one bit of it. Nope I assure you not one bit at all.

Yes I do love all that adrenalin junkie stuff because I like to challenge myself and experience as much as I can in my short time on this earth.

However, nothing enthralls me or makes my heart sing more than Mother Nature in all her unadulterated beauty and that is Herm, unspoilt, natural and techno free.

Well I say nothing enthralls me more, maybe I should have said just as much as the love of a good man, gorgeous friends and loyal fur babies, great food, fab wine........................ I am just a bon viveur people!

We are staying here, The White House Hotel, why choose this lovely place?

No choice it's the only hotel, how cute and adorable is that?

And should and I say a BIG should, need more than exploring the coast line, investigating rock pools, enthuse over the flora, fauna, birdlife and insects then I could always indulge in a bit of this!

However, I dont care if I dont. Holding my book in one hand and intermittently holding Hubsters hand and a cold Spritzer in the other and Mrs T-J is one happy lady.

Just a bit miffed I have been told I may need reading glasses soon, the stealthy "creepage" of age is totally unforgiving but I aint giving in yet.

Short and Sweet My Love

I need to have you by me
When my sight is filled
With some new wonder:
Your eyes gazing with mine
Requiring no words
Rapture of silence shared
